Visual storytelling for liberation: Afrofuturism and Embodiment with Thandiwe Gula-Ndebele // Folozi Omnyama

New Politics & Afrofuturism: University of the Underground 2020

In this talk and workshop Thandiwe Gula-Ndebele explores the possibility of disrupting the status quo through embodied practice and radical imagination, allowing access to inherent indigenous language(s), expressions of self and community that are not limited by colonial ideologies. Through reimagining the existence/functions of body, dress, gender, technology, nature, self and power in relation to our reality and understanding of community, perceptions of value and success, we can create new perspectives of freedom, community, well being, abundance and sustainability. Imagining a new world, accessing freedom through what we create and have inherited through lineage. Our shared histories of migration connect us to an age-long momentum of transformation, evolving perceptions of belonging, home and place. This body of work is an invitation to explore liberation, truths and expressions that the body can offer, learning history while reimagining self and the future in the present.
