About
Pronouns: They/Them/He/Him
Thandiwe Gula-Ndebele is a multidisciplinary storyteller currently using photography and filmmaking to document the narratives and ongoing history of their community. Thandiwe’s work inquires into concepts of freedom within the African Diaspora, with an acute focus on remembrance and empowerment. They draw on self representation and reimagination of self while prioritising the experiences and narratives of black women and black queer people. Thandiwe uses visual language to interrogate and understand memory, identity and freedom. Working towards compassionate and intimate ways of creating, their work is rooted in reflection and ritual, which they believe are “expressions and rites of passage of indigenous knowledge”.
Their work ranges from documentary films, music videos, experimental films and web series such as ‘The Foxy Five’, that have screened at film festivals in Africa as well as internationally and photographs featured in publications including Lake Magazine, Bubblegumclub, September Issues, True Africa and i-D.
